Persian Setar Improvisations — Kayhan Kalhor with Kia Tabassian
Iran’s celebrated virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor will perform on the setar, his second instrument to the bowed kamancheh, which he has rarely performed in concert. The setar is a 4-stringed lute with 25 movable frets, often associated with Sufism. He will be joined by Kia Tabassian, his student of many years, for an evening of exquisite improvisations. Renowned for his many creative collaborations and compositions, Kalhor is an original member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and has collaborated with Brooklyn Rider, Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Kronos Quartet, Osvaldo Golijov, Erdal Erzincan, and Shujaat Husain Khan, among others.
